If you enjoyed your VW camper van holiday with Devon Happy Campers we'd love to hear from you:

22nd - 25th April 2011  Our local camper crazy four....

We hired Matilda over the Easter 2011 weekend to celebrate my 40th birthday. All I can say is it’s one of those things that are in my top 20 to do in life!

From the moment we sat in her we smiled and enjoyed the experience tremendously. Kevin fell in love with Matilda within a mile! One of the first things we noticed was the ability to see over hedges. We were blessed with ‘middle of summer’ weather over the Easter weekend and took Matilda to Swanage in Dorset. Other VW campervan drivers waved and flashed lights at us and added another dynamic to our adventure.
Thanks to taking heed to Paul’s instructions before setting off, we enjoyed a wonderful weekend in partnership with Matilda.

We had a chance to enjoy Lola for the last part of our special weekend. The left hand drive was straightforward to get used to. After taking her to Widecombe-on-the-moor we journeyed to the coast.  She really looked at home on Exmouth seafront! Cooking breakfast in her on East Hill strips overlooking a wonderful view was the best way to spend our last few hours with her.

Both campers are delightful. The backup service network Paul & Tracy have arranged throughout the Southwest gives peace of mind if there is a hiccup.
We thoroughly recommend Devon Happy Campers service. Hesitate no longer…….. you’ll have a wonderful time!

For those who read our blog; Our intrepid northern 2!....

31st January - 4th February 2011

Katie's 30th birthday road trip.

Feb 2011.

Yes, it does say February! and yes, it was cold! But Lola didn't bat an eyelid and kept us lovely and cosy all week.  This was a surprise birthday trip and Lola certainly did not disappoint.

In fact she was the setting for Dave to pop THE question!!

Perhaps this was a first for Lola.

We then ambled along the roads and lanes of Cornwall, some more hairy than others, especially for the passenger! But Lola didn't mind one bit and always got us to our destination with a smile on our faces.

Not many other friends for Lola on the roads of Cornwall (all the sensible people stayed in the warmth) but it was nice to get a wave every now and again. We had plenty of admirers and people wanting to know all about lola.

Everyone we talked to did think we were crazy, including Tracy, so here are our tips for anyone else who is as brave and as mad!

*Use the electric heater - it keeps Lola snug and cosy.

*Use the window insulation if it's really cold - it does make a difference.

*Wear extra layers especially when driving.

*Try to reach your campsite in daylight, it can be hard finding the "all year round" campsites. (In fact on one site we were the only campers there!)

Thank you for an amazingly special week, hopefully see you for the honeymoon in 2012.

Love from Katie & Dave X.

10th - 17th September 2010

Lola's trip to Cornwall
by Katie & Adam :)

Top tip of the week, don't drive to Tintagel on your first day, especially when your not used to how Lola drives lol. Roads are very steep and windy so keep her in low gears and don't worry about being overtaken by Morris Minors and lorries. Besides that Tintagel was beautiful and well worth a visit with it's breathtaking views and yummy Cornish pasties.

We fully recommend staying at Porth Beach Tourist Park, where we met lots of Lola's cousins lol. Lola was a good talking point and helped us make loads of friends.

Lola felt right at home on Fistral beach in Newquay, near the sea with all the surfer dudes. She looked right at home! :)

Lola was kept company whilst we were sight seeing by our pet Dave who we bought on the M25! (p.s. Dave is a folding travel pillow shaped like a dog. Dave developed his own personality like Lola throughout the week lol).

Ladies don't be concerned if your husband/boyfriend starts to talk to Lola during your holiday, I've come to realise that nothing will come between a man and Lola lol.

We hope to visit Cornwall again soon. We have had great fun in Lola and have really fallen in love with her during the week. We will definitely take her on another adventure!

THANKS LOLA X

8th - 15th August 2010  Matilda's first honeymoon...

Wow!! What a fantastic start to married life!  We hired Matilda for our honeymoon - a road trip around Devon. We both love Devon and after getting married at the Fox and Hounds in Chumleigh thought Matilda would give us a different perspective of this beautiful county - which she definitely did!

After picking her up from Honiton and Cameron getting to grips with her gears we headed to Cockingford campsite on Dartmoor - a campsite we had been to before in a tent - Matilda was far superior and much more comfortable. We hired bikes from Devon Cycle Hire which were well worth it as Matilda could have a rest and we were still able to get out and about.

From Dartmoor we headed north to Exford on Exmoor. We were both pleasantly surprised at how well Matilda coped with the hills - a lot better than our car!!

We were the envy of the campsite - everyone loved Matilda and was very impressed with her interior and exterior.

From Exford we headed to Brendon near Lynton & Lynmouth. We were impressed with how easily Matilda was able to fit onto any space in any campsite.

We finished our road trip back on Dartmoor on a lovely campsite near one of our favourite places Lydford Gorge.

We were both warm, cosy and dry as the rain pelted down outside.

This has been the honeymoon of a lifetime which we have both thoroughly enjoyed thanks to Matilda! Maybe we will hire her again for our 1st wedding anniversary?

Thank you Matilda!

29th June - 1st July 2010

Thanks Matilda for a lovely couple of days.

After a shaky start getting lost round the narrow Devon roads we soon got the hang of things - you just have to be in "Matilda Mode".

We were the envy of the campsite, surounded by a sea of white - BORING - caravans.

Fantastic trips to the beaches and cosy to come back to at night.

It turns out we are the same age - me and Matilda - but Neil thinks Matilda has a lot more 'GO' in her than me!!

Glastonbury 40th Anniversary

Well hello again!

12 months on and we are back in Lola (oh cherry cola - more of that later)

She is still a little dream boat, although I know she isn't a boat it can feel a bit like sailing at times.

This years tips are

1.Get your mate Martin who has Matilda to go and get a pitch and put up your awning the day before!

2. On the way to the campsite get the person in the passenger seat to read the instructions especially WHICH WAY ROUND THE GROUNDSHEET GOES

The festival was very hot and not a hint of a cloud but of course mud replaced by dust!

We loved our stay in Lola and do you know Ray Davis of the Kinks sang a song all about her!!

See you next year?

Five go Mad in Devon

may_065_640

First Lola took us (quite slowly) to a great, uncommercialised camp site, overlooking Slapton Sands. The journey involved rather a lot of negotiation with some very narrow lanes (a bit hairy for the passenger!). We came across a (non V Dub) camper in the village, who had actually got rather stuck attempting to negotiate a very narrow street, with a foolishly parked car on the junction. Rather than help, Bob videoed the incident, with the hope of earning some infamy on YouTube! After a few lovely sunny days staying at Seaview and enjoying the beach at Blackpool Sands, we motored on to the River Dart Country Park.  This was at the other end of the scale to the first camp site but really enjoyable too. Lola attracted many admiring looks and comments, even when we were pedalling to get her up the hills!

We all had a great time in Lola and we waved at and admired lots of her friends. Lola is the prettiest camper by far!

Top Tips from Millie....

*Lean forwards when going up hill
*lean backwards when going down hill
*remember to shout HOOK UP when leaving
*lock side door from inside (because easier)
*breath in when going down narrow lanes
*if in Slapton slap the person next to you
*mind your head on the ceiling
*don't try and make groundsheet fit (it doesn't)
*don't ignore these tips

Lola tips!!! They're useful!

12th - 14th Sept 09 A surprise weekend for Nigel, Dee's other half!

 Hi Tracy,

Wonderful! Glad Lola survived our visit-such a fab time we loved every minute!

I attach a couple of terrible pics from our weekend...I am not sure you will want to put off future customers with our ugly mugs but there you go!
The only downside is that my other half is now obsessed with buying a van and I can see all future holidays cancelled as we save for the deposit!!
All the very best
Dee

1st - 5th Sept 09  Steve had organised a surprise birthday weekend for his wife...

Hi Tracy

We had a great time, and for the last few nights we've woken up in the night thinking we're still in the van!

Thanks for all your help and assistance to make a great holiday.

Regards

Steve.

Graham & Charlie's Week

For many, 'girls in orange',
means a lady with fake tan,
but to me, my son and all that know us,
It's Matilda the Camper Van!

She made a little boys dream come true,
When he heard the engine roar,
He fell in love with a modern legend,
And the boy is forty-four!

For miles and miles she flew along,
Hills gave her no real grief,
And you could feel her smile down the otherside,
Or was it sheer relief?!

When it rained outside, we were warm,
Snug in our 'house on wheels',
I'd always fancied a 'hippy trip',
And now I know how it feels.

It started out as a trip for two,
My 8 year-old son and me,
But very soon she takes over your life,
And its a holiday for 'three'!

We saw villages, towns, beaches and rivers,
Forests, hills and the sea,
I can't thank the orange lady enough
For her week with Charlie and me!

A brilliantly different, unique week. So many people came and spoke about Matilda; some VW experts, some just like me, just a romantic old fool. We were made welcome everywhere, and were the envy of many.

This was my first time hiring a VW Camper van, and it will not be my last.

Recommended; an outstanding area, plenty to see and visit all around Devon and a wonderful companion to share it all with.

Thank you, I should have done it years ago!

Graham

20th - 24th July 09 We managed to squeeze Brian & Patricia in between our summer bookings for a last minute weekend with Matilda...

Dear Tracy,

Hope this email finds you well.  We've written and sent photos of our trip with Matilda the same week we returned but only just discovered that the email was not delivered - probably due to too many photos. I'm sending them to you one at a time. Thank you so much for accommodating us on such short notice - we truly enjoyed our three nights with Matilda in North Devon, and hope to take her out again soon :)  We've written a short note in her diary in her glove compartment.  We were in Falmouth last week and told all our friends and family about how wonderful Devon Happy Campers has helped make our holiday :) Thank you again and fingers crossed for better weather soon. We've just gone back to work this week (poo-wee!)

Warm regards,
Patricia & Brian Hitchcock

To Tracy

Thank you for the hire of the orange vw campervan that I went to my prom in, it was amazing!

Jenny Rendell.

Just 1 night's hire but Matilda did us proud and brought back these wonderful comments...

10th - 11th May 09

We had such an amazing weekend!  Matilda took us to Woolacombe where the weather was sunny and to blustery Exmoor!  It was a surprise weekend planned by my boyfriend who knew I had grown up with VW's and it was the best birthday present ever!
Matilda was great and it was so nice to find the cupboards stocked with gadgets as we had forgotten a couple of bits.
I wish we were cruising in Matilda for longer...shame it is back to reality now!

Ellen (& Alex!)

Thank you MatildaWe've had a fantastic weekend!

We were all so excited when we first saw her in all her orange splendour.  Our Matilda adventure took us to Gower in Wales for a camping weekend.  The journey was great fun & once we'd got there we found we had absolutely everything we needed for our weekend. 2 of us slept in Matilda & 2 in the awning.  It was perfect.

We will certainly be recommending our Matilda experience to all our friends.  Thank you again for a very memorable time & an experience the girls and us will remember for a lot of years to come.

Lucy, Tim, Mia (4½) & Florence (2½) Powell.

Fantastic holiday!  Thank you so much for a great experience...Would do it again any time...wonderfully refurbished camper van and completely authentic - we have already prebooked our rental period for next year - Margie & John Smith, Scotland

We chose Devon Happy Campers because: it was really simple to get the train down to Exeter and then pick up our van exactly where we wanted to spend our holiday, on the south Devon coast.  It is a beautiful place, loads of lovely beaches and seaside towns and Matilda was the perfect vehicle for the trip – real fun to drive and very relaxing for mooching around the country roads.  We love camping but the van was even better, knowing that if the British weather did it’s worst we wouldn’t wake up in the morning soaked through.  Having the fridge and cooker too - was just so handy. We had a fantastic holiday and Tracy at Devon Happy Campers was lovely, really helpful.  We’d definitely use them again - Helen and Andy Wright
